RADARPOLITICO ANALYSIS

What is happening

Sweden is directing investment to infrastructure upgrades, maintenance and new rolling stock on the Tjustbanan and Stångådalsbanan. ERTMS will replace an ageing radio-based signalling system on the Tjustbanan and the Linköping–Rimforsa section of the Stångådalsbanan. The ERTMS project is valued at approximately SEK 750 million and includes 65 technical shelters, new cabling and five radio masts. Rail services on the Tjustbanan are expected to be replaced by buses during most of 2028 while the works are completed.

Why it is on the Radar

The signalling system being replaced has ageing equipment whose spare parts are becoming increasingly difficult to source. The investment is also linked to the planned introduction of new Krösatåg trains, including bimodal units suitable for the two non-electrified lines. The source says uncertainty remains over long-term service funding as state operating subsidies are being reduced.
