What is happening
In Brussels, Schlein said that a just peace cannot amount to surrendering to the aggressor and defended support for Ukraine. Party organizational chief Igor Taruffi said Schlein was the only PD name currently in the field, rejecting calls from the party’s reformist minority to consider former Bergamo mayor Giorgio Gori. The PD is also expected to clarify when a centre-left program meeting will be held and how any primaries would be conducted. Giuseppe Conte, Nicola Fratoianni and Angelo Bonelli oppose sending weapons to Kyiv, while Schlein supports Ukraine and calls for a diplomatic effort led by the European Union.
Why is it on the Radar?
The positions described by the sources highlight unresolved differences within the potential centre-left coalition over Ukraine and the rules and candidates for possible primaries. The PD’s October 2 leadership meeting is expected to provide further indications on both issues.
