Italian government challenges Veneto law on medically assisted suicide

The Council of Ministers has challenged Veneto’s regional law regulating procedures for medically assisted suicide.

RADARPOLITICO ANALYSIS

What is happening

The Council of Ministers decided to challenge Veneto’s law on medically assisted suicide. AGI reports that Reform Minister Roberto Calderoli voted against the decision, while Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini did not take part in the vote. Veneto Regional Council President Luca Zaia said he respected the government’s decision but continued to support the law. The law was approved by the Veneto legislative assembly on September 2, 2026, and is identified as Regional Law No. 17 of September 8, 2026.

Why it is on the Radar

The challenge concerns whether the regional law complies with the Constitution. Zaia said the law was intended to provide rules for situations already covered by Italy’s legal system and to avoid leaving patients, families and doctors without guidance. UDC secretary Antonio De Poli said end-of-life rules should be uniform across Italy and that Parliament should address the issue.
