RADARPOLITICO ANALYSIS
What is happening
The Chamber of Deputies gave final approval to the electoral law in a secret ballot, with 227 votes in favour and 164 against. The reform replaces the Rosatellum’s single-member constituencies with a proportional system including a majority bonus. The majority parties applauded, while opposition lawmakers protested in the chamber and displayed critical signs. The reform also establishes rules on preferences, candidate lists, overseas constituencies, out-of-town voting and signature collection.
Why it is on the Radar
The law changes how seats in both chambers will be allocated by linking the majority bonus to a threshold of at least 42% of the vote. It also changes candidate selection, voting arrangements for certain electors and the requirements for parties to qualify for the ballot.
