What is happening

Renzi asked that Matteo Salvini not return to the Interior Ministry, that Giancarlo Giorgetti not serve again in the Council of Ministers, and that the alliance never side with Donald Trump. He expressed support for Ukraine and Liliana Segre, appealed to reformists in Forza Italia to join his side, and said he would not run in a safe parliamentary seat. Renzi also said that Giorgia Meloni would either become president of the Republic or leave office after the next general election, and argued that a united Democratic Party, center-left, and Five Star Movement could win.

Why is it on the Radar?

Renzi’s statements outline conditions for a possible progressive alliance and frame the next elections as linked to the 2029 presidential contest. They also indicate his positions on Ukraine, relations with the center-right, and the future leadership of Italy.
