Speaking by videolink at the “Oltre le Radici” event, Meloni said she wanted the issue discussed at the next Ecofin meeting in Luxembourg and at the following European Council. She also called for a substantial review of the EU emissions trading system, saying it places excessive costs on manufacturing companies. On the next budget law, she said the government would continue focusing on wages, purchasing power, businesses, families, birth incentives and healthcare.

The proposal concerns how EU rules could allow member states to support households and businesses amid higher energy costs. Meloni also linked the emissions trading system to the competitiveness of European manufacturing and warned of a risk of deindustrialization.
