What is happening

Conte endorsed the view that “the first Woke was madness” and said the main enemy is an unequal society. The AGI report says this was viewed within the Democratic Party as a message, or possible challenge, to Schlein. Schlein did not mention Conte or the woke debate, but identified reducing energy costs, increasing incomes and restarting investment as priorities. Matteo Renzi supported criticism of “woke” politics, while Riccardo Magi disputed that Italy had experienced such an “intoxication” and said social and civil-rights issues should not be treated as alternatives.

Why is it on the Radar?

The statements have reopened a debate within the centre-left over the balance between economic and social priorities and civil rights, while discussions about possible primaries and their rules and timing remain unresolved.
