What is happening
The ceremony is being held at the Sergio Marchionne comprehensive school, which replaced the Romolo Capranica institute destroyed by the earthquake. Students from across Italy are taking part in displays focused on destruction and reconstruction. Mattarella is also scheduled to pay tribute to the earthquake’s 299 victims at Don Minozzi Park. The visit is described as his fifth to Amatrice.

The event links the reopening of schools with Amatrice’s longer reconstruction process. The earthquake interrupted neither the school year nor subsequent educational activities, while reconstruction of homes, the hospital and places of worship remains a stated priority.
