What is happening
The government said the diesel discount would remain in force for another seven days. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said further measures targeting lower-income households and certain workers were expected the following week; proposals under discussion include fuel vouchers from employers, with tax credits for companies. The government also introduced procedures allowing further action if regions do not respond to requests concerning hydrocarbon exploration and extraction, including possible intervention by a commissioner. Consumer groups Codacons and the Unione Nazionale Consumatori described the extension as insufficient.
Why is it on the Radar?
The extension is intended to help contain fuel costs, while the government said faster domestic oil and gas production could reduce Italy’s dependence on foreign energy supplies. The measure adds about €85 million to fuel support; the government says it has committed more than €2.6 billion to fuel excise reductions since mid-March.
