What is happening
The strategy cites decades of underinvestment, a funding shortfall of approximately RON 35 billion in the previous planning period, and the need to renew more than 72% of Romania’s main railway lines. The Brașov–Sighișoara project is planned for 2026–2030, with trains expected to operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h. The strategy also reports that ERTMS deployment on the Sighișoara–Coșlariu section has been completed and is undergoing final acceptance procedures.
Why is it on the Radar?
The investment is part of a longer-term programme to renew Romania’s railway network and address increasing speed restrictions. The strategy also identifies potential EU funding for metropolitan rail projects in Târgu Mureș and relatively strong passenger demand on the Războieni–Târgu Mureș–Deda route.
