Mattarella said Italy and Austria’s agreement represented a diplomatic solution to historical tensions and described European integration as having turned borders into meeting points. He said the Alto Adige/South Tyrol model demonstrated the value of protecting minorities and promoting peaceful coexistence. Van der Bellen said relations between Vienna and Rome were highly cooperative and called Alto Adige a part of Europe that unites rather than divides. Mattarella was awarded the Grand Order of Merit of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.
Why is it on the Radar?
The ceremony marked the 80th anniversary of the Paris Agreement that led to the autonomy of Trentino-Alto Adige. The participants presented the agreement, autonomy and European cooperation as elements of the region’s peaceful coexistence and shared identity.
