What is happening
Schlein’s mandate is due to expire on March 13, 2027. According to parliamentary sources cited by AGI, there is currently no apparent request for a technical extension, but the National Assembly could vote to approve a derogation. Some party figures have called for a clear legal basis for any extension. The Assembly is expected to meet six months before the expiry date, on September 13, 2026. Within the center-left, there are different positions on whether coalition primaries should be held: Roberto Speranza proposed setting aside the idea, while Michele De Pascale and the PD reformists support it; Stefano Bonaccini said priority should be given to building the coalition and agreeing on a program.
Why is it on the Radar?
The decision could affect the PD’s leadership arrangements and the process for selecting the center-left’s candidate for prime minister ahead of the 2027 national elections.
